What We Do
Why We We're Founded
The Gopher Tortoise Alliance (GTA) began with a simple but powerful question:
“How can we help the survival of Gopher Tortoises in Indian River County?”
Gopher Tortoises are more than just another iconic Florida species—they’re a keystone of our ecosystem. Over 350 other species rely on the safety of their burrows for shelter and survival.
Yet, despite being protected under Florida State Law, Chapter 68A-27.003 (F.A.C.),
their future is uncertain.
In early 2023, a small group of passionate individuals decided to take action. Today, that group has become the Gopher Tortoise Alliance (GTA)— dedicated community members from diverse backgrounds—science, wellness, education, writing, business, and even animal training—working tirelessly to make a difference.
At GTA, we believe that real change begins with community. A vision for the future may start with one person, but when like-minded people unite, powerful things happen. That’s how the Gopher Tortoise Alliance was born—and it’s why we continue to fight for the survival of these incredible creatures.

Why They Need Your Support
The gopher tortoise is a keystone species—over 350 other animals rely on its burrows for survival. Found across Florida, it is now listed as "Threatened" due to habitat loss and human impact.
These ancient tortoises have survived ice ages and mass extinctions, but today their greatest challenge is us. Protecting them means protecting entire ecosystems.
With your support, the Gopher Tortoise Alliance works to educate, inspire, and safeguard this irreplaceable species and its habitat.
